Electricity Bill Calculator

This calculator estimates your monthly electricity bill from the number of units you consume. It uses telescopic slab rates, a fixed charge and electricity duty — the same structure most Indian distribution companies (DISCOMs) follow. Because tariffs vary by state, every rate here is editable so you can match your own bill exactly.

How the Bill Is Built Up

Energy charge = Σ (units in each slab × slab rate)
Subtotal = Energy charge + Fixed charge
Total = Subtotal + Electricity duty

The effective rate shown is the total bill divided by units consumed. It is always higher than the first-slab rate because of the higher slabs, the fixed charge and duty.

Typical Domestic Slab Structure

SlabIndicative Rate
0 – 100 units₹3.50 – ₹4.50
101 – 200 units₹5.00 – ₹5.50
201 – 300 units₹6.00 – ₹6.50
301 – 400 units₹6.50 – ₹7.00
Above 400 units₹7.00 – ₹8.00

These are indicative. Check your bill or your DISCOM's tariff order for the exact numbers.

What Else Appears on a Bill

  • Fixed / demand charge: based on your sanctioned load in kW.
  • Electricity duty: a state tax, usually 5 to 15% of the charges.
  • Fuel surcharge (FPPCA): a monthly adjustment for fuel cost, not modelled here.
  • Subsidy: some states give free or subsidised units to low users.

Cutting Your Bill

Because the top slabs are the most expensive, trimming usage there saves the most. Efficient star-rated appliances, LED lighting, sensible AC temperatures and — for the biggest impact — rooftop solar can all pull you into lower slabs and reduce the effective rate you pay.
