Cutting Speed to RPM: the formula
Cutting speed (Vc) is set by the material and the tool, but the machine only understands spindle RPM. To convert, use RPM = (1000 x Vc) / (pi x D), where Vc is in metres per minute and D is the diameter in millimetres. The 1000 converts metres into millimetres so the units agree. For turning, D is the workpiece diameter. For milling and drilling, D is the tool diameter.
Feed rate from RPM
Once you have the RPM, the feed rate in millimetres per minute is Vf = RPM x feed per rev. Feed per revolution (mm/rev) is how far the tool advances for each turn of the spindle, so multiplying by RPM gives you the feed in mm/min that you set on the machine.
Worked example
Take a cutting speed of 100 m/min on a 50 mm diameter. The spindle speed is (1000 x 100) / (3.1416 x 50), which is about 636.6 RPM. With a feed of 0.2 mm/rev, the feed rate is 636.6 x 0.2, or about 127.3 mm/min. If you instead know the RPM and want the surface speed, rearrange to Vc = (pi x D x RPM) / 1000.
