There is no single number. Your retirement corpus depends on your annual expenses in the year you retire, not your income today. A common planning target is 25 to 30 times your first year of retirement expenses. For someone spending Rs 50,000 a month today and retiring in 25 years, inflation at around 6 percent can push that requirement into the range of roughly Rs 6 to 8 crore, though the exact figure depends on the assumptions you use.

What is the 25x rule and the 4% safe withdrawal rule?

The 25x rule says your retirement corpus should be about 25 times your annual expenses. It is the mirror image of the 4 percent safe withdrawal rule, a US-origin guideline that suggests withdrawing 4 percent of your corpus in the first year and adjusting for inflation thereafter. Because India has historically had higher inflation and rising life expectancy, many Indian planners prefer a more conservative 3 to 3.5 percent withdrawal rate, which corresponds to a target closer to 28 to 33 times annual expenses.

How much should I invest monthly for retirement?

It depends on your target corpus, your years to retirement and your assumed return. As an illustration, reaching a corpus of about Rs 7 crore in 25 years at an assumed 12 percent annual return needs a monthly investment of roughly Rs 37,000, growing if you start later. The single biggest lever is time: starting ten years earlier can cut the required monthly amount dramatically because of compounding. Treat every return figure as an assumption, not a guarantee.

Is NPS enough for retirement in India?

For most people NPS alone is not enough. It is a strong, low-cost building block with tax benefits, but current rules require a large part of the maturity value to be used to buy an annuity, and annuity payouts are modest. NPS works best alongside EPF, PPF and equity mutual fund SIPs rather than as your only retirement vehicle.
