Which is the best 80C investment: PPF, ELSS or NPS?

There is no single best option, it depends on your goal, risk appetite and time horizon. ELSS suits long-horizon investors comfortable with equity risk and wanting the shortest lock-in (3 years). PPF suits conservative savers who want guaranteed, tax-free, government-backed returns over 15 years. NPS suits retirement-focused investors who also want an extra Rs 50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B) over and above the 80C limit. Many investors use a mix of all three.

Do PPF, ELSS and NPS help in the new tax regime?

Section 80C deductions, including PPF, ELSS and your own NPS contribution under 80CCD(1) and 80CCD(1B), are available only under the old tax regime. The new regime does not allow them. The one exception is the employer's NPS contribution under Section 80CCD(2), which remains deductible even in the new regime. If you have opted for the new regime, these products can still be good investments, but they will not reduce your tax.

What is the extra Rs 50,000 NPS deduction?

Under Section 80CCD(1B), you can claim an additional deduction of up to Rs 50,000 for your own contribution to the National Pension System. This is over and above the Rs 1.5 lakh limit of Section 80C, so in the old regime a taxpayer maxing out both can claim up to Rs 2 lakh in total. PPF and ELSS do not offer any such extra deduction beyond the Rs 1.5 lakh 80C ceiling.

Which 80C option has the shortest lock-in?

Among the popular 80C investments, ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) has the shortest lock-in at just 3 years. PPF has a 15-year maturity and NPS is locked in until you turn 60. This makes ELSS the most liquid of the three, though its returns are market-linked and not guaranteed.
